Water Resource Management

As for use of water resources, in addition to the domestic water used in the office area, most of the water resources are used for the grinding, cutting and tape manufacturing processes. As the extreme climate has occurred more frequently as a result of the climate change, the drought and rainstorm have become a climate risk concern for the operation of a business in recent years. We improve the efficiency of water resources by implementing integration of water resources, recovery of wastewater, saving measures, and emergency response mechanisms to reduce the impact on operating activities caused by unstable water resources.

Use of Water Resources

The Company only uses running water for our operating activities. To understand the water stress in different areas, we use the “Aqueduct Water Risk Atlas” as the tool for risk assessment to identify the water resource risks in the areas where the plants are located. According to the result of the analysis, the Hsinchu Plant, Hukou Plant and Kaohsiung Plant are located in low-risk areas and the water withdrawal of each plant is less than the average water supply by 5%, indicating that no significant impact is produced on the water sources.

Water Resource Management and Recycling

The main sources of production wastewater in Chipbond are the wastewater containing silicon powders produced from the production of wafer bumps, grinding and cutting, the washing wastewater produced from the tape production, and the following listed in order: the acidic and alkaline wastewater, organic wastewater, domestic sewage and heavy-metal wastewater. To reduce our dependence on raw water and wastewater drainage, we spare no effort to improve the recycling rate of process water. First of all, we use the high-efficiency equipment to perform water recycling and the treatment of pollutants in water according to the types of wastewater produced from the operating process. Next, the recycled water is piped and collected to the wastewater treatment facility for sorting and management, so as to put the reusable water into use of production or for other secondary purposes

The Results of the Key Water-Saving Initiatives Implemented in 2022
  • The installation of light barriers on the X-axis of the Z3 polishing shaft in the Prosperity Plant effectively and precisely controls the water inflow, resulting in an annual water reduction of approximately 52,580 tons.
  • The wastewater recycling rate in the South 6th cutting process has been increased from 70% to 85%, resulting in an annual increase in recycled water volume of approximately 13,682.4 tons.

In terms of water resource recycling, the amount of process water recycled reached 861,567 metric tons, representing a decrease of 21.03% compared to the previous year. The recycling rate decreased by 10.89%. This is mainly due to variations in the wastewater recycling capabilities among different product categories, which is a result of changing market demands for products.

Overall, the total water withdrawal of the Company was 1,987,507 tons in 2022 with an increase of 1.21% in comparison with the previous year. However, the water withdrawal intensity was increase by 11.43% in comparison with the previous year. Compared to the reference year, there has been a decrease of 33.65% in water intake intensity (Reference year: Water intake intensity was 124.6448 metric tons per million revenue in 2015).en_water02.jpg (245 KB)
